Prof. GU Yidong, is an expert in space science and application technology, graduated from the Department of Engineering Physics at Tsinghua University in 1970. He currently serves as the Chief Expert in space science of China's Manned Space Engineering, director of the academic committee of the Technology and Engineering Center for Space Utilization, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), and chief engineering designer of two scientific satellite projects. Prof. GU engaged in research on cosmic rays and scientific balloon technology at the Institute of High Energy Physics, CAS, led the establishment of China's high-altitude scientific balloon system and promoted the explorations of cosmic rays, X-ray astronomy, and high-altitude scientific research. In the Manned Space Engineering, he led the construction of the Space Utilization Technology System, organized over 100 scientific and applied projects in Earth observation, space life sciences, microgravity sciences, space astronomy, and space environment. He also led the planning of space science and applied programs during the construction period of space laboratories and space stations, and has published over 100 papers and reports. Prof. GU has been awarded the National May 1st Labor Medal, the National Science and Technology Progress Special Award, the Outstanding Scientific and Technological Achievement Collective Award from the QiuShi Science Foundation, etc. In 2005, he was elected member of the CAS.
