Ouyang Zhongcan graduated from the Department of Automatic Control of Tsinghua University in 1968, received a master's degree in solid-state physics from the Department of Physics of Tsinghua University in 1981, and a doctorate of science in optics in 1984. From 1985 to 1986, he worked as a post doctor at the Institute of Theoretical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences. In 1986, he was awarded the Humboldt Research Fellowship from West Germany to engage in collaborative research at the Free University of Berlin. In 1989, he was appointed as an associate researcher at the Institute of Theoretical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and was promoted to researcher in 1992. In 1997, he was co-elected as an academician of China Academy of Sciences. From 1998 to 2007, he served as the Director of the Institute of Theoretical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and currently serves as the Director of the Strategic Development Committee of the Institute of Theoretical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences.Ouyang Zhongcan is mainly engaged in research on liquid crystals, biofilm theory, elastic properties of DNA biomacromolecules and protein folding.
